Variegated Devil's Backbone Euphorbia
Variegated Devil's Backbone Euphorbia
šæ Botanical Name: Euphorbia tithymaloides āVariegataā
š Common Names: Variegated Devilās Backbone, Jacobās Ladder, Redbird Flower
Description
Variegated Devilās Backbone is a wonderfully quirky succulent shrub known for its crooked, zig-zag stems and colorful foliage. Its small, pointed leaves are edged in shades of cream, yellow, and chartreuse, giving the plant a bright, almost painted appearance.
During cooler months, the leaf margins may develop beautiful pink to reddish tones, adding even more color to this already unusual plant. As it matures, its sculptural growth habit makes it a fun statement plant for anyone who likes houseplants with a little personality.
Tiny red flowers may occasionally appear at the growing tips, although flowering is less common indoors.
š¤ļø Light: Give your Variegated Devilās Backbone a bright indirect view of the sky. A little gentle direct sunlight can help maintain strong variegation and encourage pink coloring, but introduce stronger light gradually to avoid scorching.
š§ Water: Allow the soil to become approximately 75% dry before watering thoroughly. Although it has succulent qualities, avoid leaving it completely dry for extended periods, which may lead to leaf drop.
šŖ“ Soil: Use a light, well-draining soil mix that allows excess water to move through the pot easily.
š¦ Humidity: Average household humidity is generally sufficient. This plant does not require high humidity.
šæ Fleurish Tip: If your Devilās Backbone begins dropping leaves, check both ends of the watering spectrum. Staying wet too long can cause root problems, while prolonged extreme dryness can also trigger leaf drop.
ā ļø Pet & People Safety: Like other Euphorbias, this plant contains a milky sap that can irritate skin and eyes and can be harmful if ingested. Keep it away from curious pets and small children, and wash your hands after pruning or handling damaged stems.
Please Note: Decorative pots are not included unless otherwise stated. Plants are shipped in plastic grower pots with drainage holes, and pot color may vary. Every plant is unique, so size, shape, color, variegation, and growth pattern may vary slightly from the photos shown.
