Fern 'Sprengeri'
Fern 'Sprengeri'
Sprenger’s Asparagus Fern
Botanical Name: Asparagus aethiopicus
Common Name(s): Sprenger’s Asparagus, Asparagus Fern
Description
Don’t let the name fool you — this “fern” is really an undercover shrub with major main-character energy. Native to South Africa (not South America — common misconception!), Sprenger’s asparagus grows long, trailing vines covered in soft-but-don’t-trust-it needle-like leaves. Those tiny spines? Yep, they’re real. They pop up sporadically along the stems like a little “surprise, boo!” so handle with a touch of respect.
This plant fills space FAST, making it a gorgeous hanging basket diva or a lush shelf waterfall. She’s airy, feathery, and just the right amount of wild.
Care Instructions
☀️ Light
Thrives in bright, indirect view of the sky.
It can tolerate medium light, but growth will slow and it may get a bit leggy. Avoid harsh direct sun — those delicate cladodes will crisp faster than a forgotten beignet.
💧 Water
Keep soil consistently lightly moist, like a sponge that’s been wrung out but not abandoned.
Let the top 25% dry out before watering again.
She’s dramatic when thirsty — expect yellowing or shedding if she’s left too dry.
🐾 Pet Safety
Not pet-safe.
The berries and foliage can be toxic to pets, and those sneaky thorns can irritate skin. Keep out of paw’s reach.
🌿 Fleurish Tip
Sprengeris LOVE humidity but don’t need a humidifier — place them near other plants to create a cozy micro-jungle, just how we like it. And if she starts looking sparse, give her a summer vacay outdoors in shaded bright light… she'll fluff up like magic.
