Botanical Name: Phalaenopsis amabilis
Common Name(s): Moon Orchid, Moth Orchid, The Lovely Phalaenopsis
Description: Native to Southeast Asia and Northern Australia, Phalaenopsis amabilis is one of the most popular and widely grown orchids. Known for its elegant blooms that can last for several months, this orchid grows with thick roots, short leafy stems, and a graceful flower spike that often branches to create multiple blossoms. The large, flat flowers resemble moths in flight, making them a striking centerpiece in any collection.
Care Requirements: These orchids thrive with a wide view of the sky but prefer indirect light. They grow best in a well-draining orchid mix that allows air to circulate around their roots. Water thoroughly, letting the roots dry slightly between waterings, and increase humidity when possible. Fertilize lightly during the active growing season.
Size & Growth: A relatively slow grower, Phalaenopsis amabilis typically reaches 1–3 feet in height with flower spikes that can extend even taller. Repot every 1–2 years in the spring after blooming to refresh the growing medium and encourage healthy root growth.
Pet Friendliness: Safe for homes with pets 🐾
