Botanical Name: Asparagus setaceus
Common Name(s): Fern Asparagus
Description:
The Asparagus Fern (Asparagus setaceus) is a graceful houseplant known for its delicate, feathery foliage that gives it a soft and airy appearance. Despite its name, it is not a true fern but rather a member of the Liliaceae family, making it more closely related to lilies and tulips. Native to Southern Africa, this plant has wiry stems covered in fine, threadlike cladodes that resemble fronds. Often grown in hanging baskets or atop shelves, it trails elegantly or can be trained to climb. While its texture looks plush and inviting, the plant does develop small thorny spurs. It is commonly appreciated for its ornamental qualities, though it is toxic to both humans and pets if ingested.
Lighting Requirements:
Thrives in a spot with an indirect view of the sky. It can handle some softer morning sun but should be shielded from harsh direct light to prevent leaf scorch.
Watering Needs:
Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Allow the top inch to dry slightly between waterings. Asparagus Ferns also appreciate regular misting or a humid environment to maintain their soft, full look.
Pet Friendliness:
🚫 Toxic to pets and humans. Ingestion can cause stomach upset, and the thorny spurs can also irritate skin.
