Begonia 'Soli Mutata'
Begonia 'Soli Mutata'
Botanical Name: Begonia soli-mutata
Common Name(s): Sun-Changing Begonia
Sun-Changing Begonia is an evergreen, creeping, rhizomatous perennial grown primarily for its absolutely spectacular foliage. Heart-shaped leaves emerge in deep, dark green and are dramatically marked with lime-green radiating veins that look almost hand-painted.
As the plant matures and responds to light, scarlet-toned edges develop, giving it that “sun-changing” glow it’s named for. The overall effect? Rich, moody, and bold — like velvet with attitude.
This is a foliage-forward plant that thrives when given stability and consistency.
☀️ Light
Prefers bright light with an indirect view of the sky.
Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while too little light may dull the contrast and color intensity.
💧 Water
Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry about 50% before watering again.
Keep soil consistently moist but never soggy. Rhizomes dislike sitting in wet conditions.
🌡 Temperature & Environment
-
Thrives between 65–75°F.
-
Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
-
Stable indoor conditions support stronger foliage color.
🌱 Soil
Use a light, airy, well-draining mix that prevents compaction around the rhizomes. Drainage holes are essential.
🐾 Pet Safety
Not pet-safe. Keep out of reach of pets.
✂️ Maintenance
-
Remove damaged leaves at the base.
-
Rotate occasionally for even growth.
-
Avoid wetting leaves excessively to preserve their texture and finish.
🌿 Fleurish Tip
If the scarlet edging starts fading or the lime veining looks less dramatic, evaluate your light first. Consistent bright indirect light enhances color expression. Stability = stronger contrast.
Sun-Changing Begonia doesn’t whisper. It glows, shifts, and shows off — all while staying compact and refined.
