4 Tips for Happier, Healthier Houseplants
(With Tools to Help You Flourish 🌱)
Let’s face it — houseplants don’t come with an instruction manual. And while some are more forgiving than others, most plant problems can be prevented with just a few mindful habits (and a couple of great tools from Amazon).
Here are 4 simple plant care tips that’ll help you grow a thriving indoor jungle — and the products I recommend to make it easier.
🌿 1. Know Your Plant
Not all plants drink the same way. A fern will have a full meltdown if neglected for two days, while a snake plant might not even notice a month-long dry spell. That’s why it’s important to know what each plant needs — not just in terms of water, but also light, humidity, and soil type.
Want to get to know your plants better? Start with a good houseplant care guide like this Houseplant for Beginners Book — it walks you through the needs of common plants and how to identify them by leaf type, root structure, and more.
You can also track what you learn in a
📝 Plant Care Journal — a great tool to help you remember what each plant likes (or hates).
👆 2. Check the Soil — Not the Clock
One of my go-to tips is what I call the Bake Watering Method. Ditch the rigid calendar schedule. Instead, check the soil with a wooden stick, like a bamboo skewer or chopstick.
Here’s how it works:
Insert the stick a few inches into the soil. If it comes out clean, the soil is dry and ready to water. If it comes out with soil stuck to it, there’s still moisture — it can “bake” longer before its next drink.
Grab a pack of
🥢 Bamboo Skewers or
🥄 Knitting Needles also work
And if you're using our Plant Care Cards from Fleurish, use the recommended stick-depth for each plant — and if you don’t have a card, request one from us anytime!
⏳ 3. Skip the Schedule, Trust the Signs
Every plant has a rhythm. It’s not about checking the clock — it’s about observing your plant’s cues.
Drooping leaves? Could be thirsty — or overwatered.
Crispy edges? Might need more humidity.
Faded color? Probably not getting enough light.
Use a
🔍 Macro Lens Attachment for your phone to zoom in and check for pests or subtle changes. And if you're just starting out, a
📘 Plant Tracker Notebook can help you learn what your plant is telling you over time.
🚿 4. Upgrade Your Tools
One thing that makes a huge difference? Using the right watering tools.
If you’re still using an old coffee mug or a bulky pitcher, it’s time to upgrade. A
💧 Narrow-Spout Watering Can helps you direct water exactly where it needs to go — without soaking your shelves or floor.
And don’t forget: room temperature water is best. Cold water can shock your plant’s roots. I keep a
🥤 Glass Watering Bottle filled and sitting out so it’s always ready and at the perfect temp.
Want to keep your workspace clean while repotting or watering? Try a
🪴 Foldable Plant Repotting Mat — especially helpful in small spaces.
🌼 Ready to Step Up Your Plant Game?
You don’t have to know everything. You just have to be curious enough to learn one thing at a time. The tools above are all about making your job easier — and your plants happier.
